House of the Living Suns
By Eric Gonzales
If you have never had the opportunity to catch the Living Suns play the House of Blues then I highly suggest you invest a little time and money this coming friday and make your way out to Anaheim. For those of you who have caught any one of their three previous shows, you need no convincing; but maybe a little reminder.... From the initial album release show in July of 2008 to their last apperance almost a full year ago on January 9th, the Suns have proved their ability to pack the house past capacity, perform at a top notch level, and overall, they simply have a great time. Bringing along with them such names as My Pet Saddle, the Growlers, Dusty Rhodes and the River Band, and the Shys to name a few. As well as the unexpected introduction of both Fools Gold and the Entrance Band, to the majority of us here in Orange County.
Friday Dec. 11th - All Ages - 7 pm
Party Weirdo
By: Lynnsee Pedersen
Flower Street Listing attends Party Weirdo giving insight into how good jack in the box tacos really are and why it's never a good idea to forget your jacket.
A festival full of twenty bands on a Saturday afternoon will always make for a good time even if I forgot my coat. Luckily I recieved a helping hand in that department. PARTY WEIRDO, hosted in Long beach during artwalk in what I call a romantic looking area; seemed to have potential. The set list was impressive and enabled a lot of us to be exposed to bands we had not seen before. If anything that is exactly what a majority of us are in search for on a day to day basis. It was a social event although it would have been nice to see a better turn out of people but perhaps that is what this website 's purpose is in the long run. I got the privelage of watching Lumerians (San Francisco) who had the drum beat straight to my heart. I am a sucker for some good percussion. Hopefully we will see more of them in this area soon. Our beloved Living Suns and My Pet Saddle played a good set as usual as well as DVA DAMAS. Always glad to see Flower Street family playing events such as this. Hopefully this will give us some push to throw another event of our own, because personally I am dying to host another party for 500 of you again. Look out for shows this week, there are some really good ones.
Growlers and Vampire Weekend
By: Eric Gonzales
Do people love these guys or what?
This past monday night in Visalia, CA., my good friends the Growlers opened for Columbia University's very own, Vampire Weekend. This was my second opportunity to catch VW live and in all honesty I didnt really enjoy the first one. So i came along on this trip to help out and also because I knew it was going to be a huge show. Not to mention theres really nothing better than getting out of town with this bunch. Before we left from the studio, Warren, one of the Growler's newest members (also fronts Grand Elegance), made it a point to remind everyone to stay positive and have a good time. Oh how such a small little reminder could determine an entire evening. The venue didnt have the largest of capacities (420) but it sold out in 4 minutes, as told to us by one of the head promoters there that evening. He also said that at one point tix were going for close to $150 on Craigslist.... the show was unbelievably successfull, an absolute hit all the way through. Though the majority of the crowd was left motionless by Brooks and Co.'s anticts, as most of them had probably never seen anything like it, they made up for it in applause after each song and a steady come and go to the merch table throughout the duration of the evening. As far as Vampire Weekend, well I wont go as far as to say I became a fan overnight, but I did enjoy it quite a bit more than the previous encounter. Those that did come for VW, I could tell got there moneys worth. Playing a very solid set and casually just enojying themselves as the entire 400+ crowd moved along.
Dva Damas
Pronounced DUH-VA DUH-MAS
It's like a chant I have been hearing silently through the streets of Long Beach. Now that the new site is up and running I can finally listen. Which is exactly what I did this morning-and where the hell have I been.
The funny thing is I have been in company of DVA DAMAS over the last couple months a multitude of times. It's credible that I heard about them from friends and not directly from the band itself. After playing "Brand New Head" it occured to me that we have absolutely nothing like this on our site. It's like finding gold or even better a cigarette that you hid in your car just in case you ran out.
Categorized as gothic new wave and consisting of Taylor, Dillan, Joe, Patrick and Shawna I suggest attending a show.

The Cosmonauts
The name had been passed by my ears a good amount of times but after hearing about Love Your Mother's old bassist joining the Cosmonauts, I knew a trip to the Santa Ana Sanctuary was in route. Flower Street Listing takes a trip to a cuban inspired house filled with plenty of champagne, lost boys, and access to a look at The Cosmonauts.
A proper review on the Halloween show is in the works but I caught a glance at The Cosmonauts at The Living Suns Warehouse in Fullerton as well as Tuesday night at The Crosby in Santa Ana. A rather polite and talented group of individuals, this band had traces of familiarity. I can't put my finger on it, but it's familiar. It reminds me of english breakfast tea in London but at two in the morning and maybe with a shot of bourbon in it. The sound is loud but I could get lost in it, probably forget what time it is and not even know where I had been standing for the last ten minutes. Derek (vocals, guitar) stares into space as if what he is singing about is too pointless or too much to show any sort of emotion. A familiar face-Alex from La Chupacabra (guitar, vocals) has a steady habit of rocking back and forth. I suggest drowning in this, it's a good find and it is within the family.
cheers

Burger Records hosted their Grand Opening of their new and used record store on October third, setting a new standard for doing big things. Burger made the front cover of the OC Weekly opening awareness of the store even to my stepdad. The idea is to only sell vinyl and cassettes, which as you know supports the fact that cd's are pointless and maybe even mp3's too.
The bright green walls were fitting and many familiar faces were in attendance, setting up what I consider a great support system. The most genius aspect of the night: burger shaped cupcakes and also the free burgers being handed out outside. Definitely a successful turnout, but after every Grand Opening there is business to be done. We at Flower Street wish you guys at Burger Records the best of luck and respect for taking a step up towards local music recognition.

Where Ya at Sun?
By: Joseph Baca
Current Living Sun's lull has their fans anticipating the next move. This is a band that is always hard at work trying to get their music heard, always filling the week with shows, which last saw them end their July Residency at the Gypsy Lounge. One day, I join them at their warehouse, not on the clock for Flower Street, but as a friend, with no intention to report. Due to change, I write this:
"You want to listen?" Sun's singer and long time friend Bryan King hands me a set of headphones and I am invited into their domain. He steps into a bathroom riddled with dirty mirrors and cramped with the common; sink, toilet, mic, bidet. Scratch that. I'm found sitting in for the vocal recordings of Rhinestone Girl--reprise three, the song has been modified enough times to the point where any trace of the original, are unapparent. But, we've heard that number, what's new? It can safely be said that even the most devoted fans have not experienced what the band has in store for the upcoming 2nd Annual Longhair Illuminati Festival_The Knitting Factory this Sunday. The old set list has been replaced with the product of the hiatus, and through some rogue recordings appearing on their myspace, we can get a taste of their new approach, along with the addition of Zach Nelson on violin and sitar. Songs "Down the River" and "Golden Sky", are recently recorded and can be heard on the band's myspace, but as for the rest of the set, your guess is as good as mine and only two days separate us from them.
Grumblin, Growlin & Glowin
Article and Photos By: Heather Jean
Wednesday night I went on a solo mission to mars. Not for reals, though my weird mood made it feel just as foreign. It was my first trek to The Coach House (San Juan Capistrano), after completely passing it and having to detour like crazy to get back (thanks Mapquest), finally got there. For starts, I was a little disappointed that the place was more or a restaurant/ bar than anything, tables and chairs took up most of the room. I was bummed that no flash photography was allowed, but tried shooting anyways. There's a few okay photos but overall I was disappointed with how the bulk of them turned out. Next time, I definitely need to use a lens with a wider aperture and hopefully the results will be better.
Enough with the bitching and whining though, who cares anyways? I didn't hear anyone complaining at the show, first band was what I would call operatic hillbilly blues. Not my usual cup of tea, but they were really original and seemed to be genuine.
After Crooked Cowboy's set, energetic duo The Freshwater Indians brought on the violin and got some old time hoe down music going. They were followed by a film called "Summer of the Cat", who's images of summertime and mellow but psychedelic vibes set the mood and raised anxiousness for the final set.
Growlers finally played around 11, where's Jordan though? I'm not sure, but there are two new additions to the group which I was surprised to see. Not surprisingly, the Growlers were awesome. (for lack of a better word) Totally blanked and didn't buy an album though, so I'll talk about that when I get it.
KUCI Friendly Fright
By: Heather Jean
Last week's KUCI fright show at the Yost theater in Santa Ana originally attracted my attention when I heard Hindu Pirates were playing. I've been to a few of their shows and have never been disappointed, the kids have genuine talent. Upbeat songs with catchy lyrics make the group, in a friend of mine's words, " super precious" and though they are young, its apparent that they are ambitious and dedicated when it comes to their music. So, Thursday night I hit the Yost, camera in hand and Friday on my mind.
Hindu Pirates opened, The Huntington Beach based band recently added a new member on guitar, who seemed a bit nervous but with time got more comfortable. I was in an optimistic mood after dancing through their set and decided to stay for the rest of the show and shoot more, I'm so glad I did. Next up, Inazuma was the epitome of badass. It was the first I'd heard of the band from Japan who combines rockabilly, with an indie-grunge sound and I immediately was into their songs though I have no clue what they were about, as the lyrics were in Japanese.
Since it was just a few days before Halloween, it would have been inappropriate to not book Death Hymn No. 9 for the show. They were looking exceptionally zombified as they played a wild set that fit the pre-holiday vibes well. I always get a kick out of photographing them, high energy performances and crazy get-ups make for interesting photos. Thursday was no exception, and just for shits and giggles I tweaked camera settings to make some cool effects. The bizzare effect obsession continued into Gestapo Khazi's set, during which I wound up getting a bit distracted and going back to regular shots.
My distraction was simple, a new appreciation for Gestapo Khazi, as for once I was able to listen to them and not stress about getting perfect shots since its virtually impossible at the Yost anyways. New favorite song: "Too Drunk to Fuck", thanks to bad lighting and a broken external flash. All in all, it was the perfect way to spend the Thursday evening before Halloween weekend.
